Salazie
Réunion
Salazie is a small mountain town set inside a volcanic caldera on the French island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. First settled in 1829 after a cyclone devastated the nearby coast, it became a municipality in 1889. Its name may derive from the Malagasy word salazy, meaning "good encampment." The wider region is ringed by UNESCO World Heritage sites, and the caldera setting gives the town a dramatic mountain-and-water character.
