Salihorsk, a city in Belarus's Minsk Region on the right bank of the Sluch River, owes its existence to the discovery of rich potash salt deposits in the area: founded as a workers' settlement in the late 1950s under the name Novastarbinsk, it became one of the youngest cities in the country and grew into one of the world's major centres of potash fertiliser production. The city sits roughly south of Minsk and is among the most densely populated for its footprint in Belarus.
