A highland city in Chiapas with an exceptionally dense café and restaurant scene, cobblestone streets, and a well-preserved Spanish colonial centre of red-tile roofs, wrought-iron balconies, and historic churches. Founded in 1528, San Cristóbal de las Casas served as the state capital until 1892 and is still considered Chiapas's cultural capital. Major landmarks include the cathedral, the Santo Domingo church with its open-air crafts market, and the Casa Na Bolom museum. The city was designated a Pueblo Mágico by the Mexican government in 2003.
