San Francisco de Campeche
Campeche · Mexico
San Francisco de Campeche, on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico, is one of the few cities in North America with most of its historic colonial walls still intact — a distinction that earned its old city UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999. Founded in 1540 by Spanish conquistadores over a Maya settlement, the walled centre holds numerous historic churches, including one in the Guadalupe barrio approaching five centuries old, alongside a walkable waterfront with cafés and restaurants.
