San José de Chiquitos

Founded in 1697 as a Jesuit mission settlement, San José de Chiquitos is part of the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1990. The town sits in Bolivia's Santa Cruz Department, a few hours east of Santa Cruz de la Sierra by road. Nearby, the ruins of the mission of San Juan Bautista lie close to the village of San Juan de Taperas, and the site of Santa Cruz de la Sierra's original founding is preserved within the historic Santa Cruz La Vieja national park.
