Founded in 1736, San José is Costa Rica's capital and its main hub for culture, dining, and national institutions, with a dense café and restaurant scene and a centre thick with historic churches. Home to the National Theater of Costa Rica, the Museo Nacional de Costa Rica, and La Sabana Metropolitan Park, the city sits in the Central Valley with mountains close by. UNESCO recognised it as a Design City, and it joined the UNESCO Global Network of Learning Cities in 2016.
