San Juan Bautista

Founded in 1797 around Mission San Juan Bautista, this pocket-sized California city in San Benito County draws visitors to its State Historic Park and the cluster of historic sites surrounding the original Spanish mission. El Teatro Campesino, a well-known Chicano theatre company, is also based here. The town was briefly called San Juan de Castro after Mexican secularization in 1833 before incorporating in 1896.
