A city on the southern and western banks of the Biobío River, San Pedro de la Paz sits within the Greater Concepción metropolitan area in Chile's Biobío Region, with the Pacific Ocean forming its western edge. Its main avenue, Pedro Aguirre Cerda, was completed in 2005. The city traces its origins to a Spanish fort established in 1603 by Alonso de Ribera, burned during the War of Independence in 1821, and later ruined by the 1835 Concepción earthquake.
