This coastal parish on São Jorge island in the Azores, Santo Amaro stretches from the southern shore across the island's interior to the north coast, with a little central core of cafés and restaurants. The parish has a wine-making history, particularly on the warmer, drier south coast, where grapes produced high-alcohol wines with strong tannins; the north coast's fajãs still yield wines from the Cheiro grape variety. A volcanic eruption here in 1580 was the first recorded after the island's settlement.
