Member of the Les Plus Beaux Villages de France association, Sare is a pocket-sized Basque village in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques on the Spanish border, backed by the Pyrenean mountains. Its traditional Labourdine farmhouses — some dating partially to the 15th century — define the popular image of the Basque house. The village has prehistoric caves, Bronze Age funerary monuments on its mountain plateaus, and a cross-border history shaped by smuggling, pastoral agreements with neighbouring Spanish communes, and a dramatic mass deportation during the French Revolution in 1794.
