Sarlat-la-Canéda
Dordogne · France
Sarlat-la-Canéda's medieval and early Renaissance centre — a dense network of narrow lanes, shaded squares, and stone mansions with lauze-tile roofs — was the first in France to benefit from the 1964 Malraux heritage-preservation law. The cathedral of Saint-Sacerdos and the bishops' palace recall the town's centuries as an episcopal seat, while the Place de la Liberté hosts a market selling regional foie gras, truffles, figs, and walnuts. The historic core is regularly used as a film location, and the town carries a classified "city of art and history" designation.
