Sault Ste. Marie

The Sault Ste. Marie Canal, a National Historic Site managed by Parks Canada, is the centrepiece of this Ontario waterfront town, where a compact centre holds a concentration of cafés and restaurants. The canal's lock — dating in its current form to 1895 — was built to bypass the rapids on the St. Marys River and once formed part of the shipping route from the Atlantic Ocean to Lake Superior. Today it serves mainly pleasure craft, and the surrounding area draws visitors for its scenic viewpoints.
