Laos's second-largest city, Savannakhet sits on the Mekong River in the west of the country, with a walkable centre dense with cafés and restaurants. The city holds a 15th-century Buddhist temple, Wat Sainyaphum, alongside a Chinese temple, a Catholic co-cathedral, and a mosque. The Second Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge crosses the Mekong here, linking Savannakhet to Mukdahan Province in Thailand and making it a natural transit point between Thailand and Vietnam.
