Schiermonnikoog
Netherlands
The smallest municipality in the Netherlands by population, Schiermonnikoog is a car-free island village in the Wadden Sea, part of the West Frisian Islands and home to the country's first national park. Visitors leave their cars on the mainland at Lauwersoog and cross by ferry; after the last boat departs each evening, the village high street, Langestreek, quiets considerably. A small selection of cafés and restaurants serves the village, which sits within walking distance of the surrounding national park landscape.
