Selenice
Albania
Selenice, a small town in southwestern Albania's Vlorë County, has been defined by its natural bitumen mines since at least 1830, when a British company established the first organised mining operation there. The town sits on the left bank of the Vjosa River, at the foot of hills where the Shushica flows into it. In the 2011 census, Selenice was the only commune in Albania where self-declared Aromanians outnumbered declared ethnic Albanians, and a school for Aromanian-language instruction opened there in 2021.
