Founded in 1825 by free Black Americans, Seneca Village was Manhattan's first such community and once occupied the land that is now Central Park, near the Upper West Side. At its peak the settlement had three churches, two schools, and three cemeteries before its residents were displaced by eminent domain in 1857 to make way for the park. A historical marker installed in 2001 and a 2019 Central Park Conservancy exhibit mark the site, and ongoing archaeological work continues to recover the village's history.
