Sermoneta
Latina · Italy
Walled hill village in Lazio's Latina province, Sermoneta is anchored by a massive castle built by the Annibaldi family and expanded by the Caetani in the 13th century, alongside the Romanesque Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the older churches of San Giuseppe and San Michele. The nearby Cistercian Valvisciolo Abbey adds to a concentration of historic architecture unusual for a village this size. Sermoneta is also the hometown of Renaissance humanist Aldo Manuzio and 18th-century painter Antonio Cavallucci, and sits in wine-growing country in central Italy.
