Shahrisabz, in Uzbekistan's Qashqadaryo region, is the birthplace of Timur (Tamerlane), the 14th-century conqueror whose legacy shaped Central Asia, and the city's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. One of Uzbekistan's oldest cities, with archaeological evidence of settlement dating to the mid-first millennium BCE, it was known in earlier centuries as Kesh before acquiring its current name from the 13th century onward. Mountains are visible from the city, and rivers run along its southern and northern edges.
