Shantou
China
A large coastal city on the eastern shore of Guangdong, Shantou was one of the treaty ports opened to Western trade in the 19th century and later became one of China's original special economic zones in the 1980s. Situated at the mouths of the Han, Rong, and Lian rivers where they meet the South China Sea, the city also holds Guangdong's largest island, Nan'ao, to its east. It remains the economic centre of eastern Guangdong and is home to Shantou University.
