Shuangyashan
Heilongjiang Province · China
This large coal-mining city in eastern Heilongjiang Province, Shuangyashan sits along the Ussuri River, which forms the border with Russia's Khabarovsk and Primorsky Krais, with the Laoyeling and Wandashan ranges rising to the south. The city holds the largest coal reserves in Heilongjiang Province and combines heavy industry — coal, metallurgy, chemicals, and machinery — with wetlands, forests, and farmland across the Sanjiang Plain. Its name, meaning "pair-of-ducks mountains," refers to two peaks northeast of the urban centre.
