Shwebo is the birthplace of the Konbaung Dynasty, founded by King Alaungpaya in 1752 and the dominant political force in Burma through the mid-18th century and beyond. The city served as Alaungpaya's capital until 1760 and is known in Pali as Ratanāsiṅga, meaning "Center of Treasure." Situated in Sagaing Region between the Irrawaddy and Mu rivers, it is home to Shwebo Palace and Shwebo University, with mountains visible from the city and UNESCO World Heritage sites in the wider region.
