Sijilmasa
Province d Errachidia · Morocco
Sijilmasa was one of the most important medieval trade centres in the Maghreb, serving as the northern terminus of the western trans-Saharan caravan route until the 14th century and becoming so closely associated with the gold trade that Arabic sources linked its very name to gold. Founded around 757 CE in the fertile Tafilalt oasis south of the High Atlas, the city's ruins now stretch for five miles along the River Ziz near Rissani, making it a significant archaeological site in Morocco's Errachidia province.
