This quiet Cycladic island between Ios and Folegandros was known in antiquity as Oenoe — Island of Wine — and carries an unusual density of religious architecture for its size: 61 pocket-sized chapels dot the landscape alongside six Byzantine churches with 13th- and 14th-century frescoes. The hilltop chora divides into two adjacent settlements, Castro and Chorio, with a 15th-century fortified quarter built at the cliff's edge. The ancient temple of Pythian Apollo, later converted into the church of Episkopi and now identified as a Roman mausoleum, received a Europa Nostra Award in 2022 for its excavation and restoration.
