A section of the Great Wall of China northeast of Beijing, Simatai runs between two watchtower clusters divided by Yuanyang Lake, with mountains visible across the landscape. Originally built during the Northern Qi dynasty and rebuilt in the Ming period, the wall stretches from Wangjing Tower in the east to Houchuankou in the west. It connects to the Jinshanling section, making a combined hike popular with visitors. Simatai was listed as a national heritage site in 2001 and reopened to tourists in 2014 after a period of closure.
