Sobral, a regional city in the interior of Ceará, is where British scientists led by Sir Frank Watson Dyson observed the solar eclipse of 29 May 1919, providing the first observational proof of Albert Einstein's theory of general relativity. The city's Museu do Eclipse commemorates the event, and a monument in Patrocínio Square marks the observation site, alongside a planetarium opened in 2015. Sobral's historic urban centre was listed as a Brazilian cultural heritage site in 1999.
