Sodankylä, a small town in Finnish Lapland, has hosted the Midnight Sun Film Festival since 1986, drawing international attention to this remote northern municipality. The Kitinen River runs near the town centre, and the surrounding landscape is one of vast Lapland wilderness. The municipality is officially bilingual in Finnish and Northern Sami, and its territory includes the Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory, known locally as Tähtelä — "Place of Stars."
