Sitting at the mouth of the Congo River on Angola's northern border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Soyo is an industrial port city in Zaire Province with a layered history: once an independent state in the 17th century that shaped the politics of the Kingdom of Kongo, it is now Angola's largest oil-producing region. The port and petroleum terminals at Barra do Cuanda define the city's modern character.
