A walkable town on the Hornád River in Slovakia's Spiš region, with a food-and-drink scene concentrated in its centre and easy access to Slovak Paradise National Park. First documented in 1268 as a German colonial settlement, it grew through medieval copper, iron, and silver mining rights and became a transport hub after the Košice–Bohumín railway opened in 1871. The medieval town of Levoča and Spiš Castle are both nearby, and a biennial amateur music festival, Divertimento musicale, draws ensembles from across Slovakia.
