Once Sudan's principal Red Sea port, Suakin is a town on the northeastern coast whose old city was built entirely on a coral island — the historic buildings now standing as ruins. The island quarter forms an archaeological site that draws independent travellers, while the surrounding waters and nearby mountains add to the setting. Port Sudan lies a short distance to the north.
