Suifenhe
China
This border city in southeastern Heilongjiang province where the old Chinese Eastern Railway crosses into Russia, Suifenhe serves as China's main gateway to Vladivostok. Since 2014 it has been the only Chinese city where trading in Russian rubles is officially permitted, giving it a distinctly cross-border commercial character. The city takes its name from the Suifen River and saw heavy fighting in August 1945 when Soviet forces swept through Japanese-occupied Manchuria.
