Birthplace of Xiang Yu, the Chu-Han warlord known as the Hegemon-King of Western Chu, Suqian is a large city in northern Jiangsu Province with more than 2,700 years of recorded urban history. The Grand Canal passes through the city, which sits amid a dense river network that includes Luoma Lake to the northwest and Hongze Lake to the south. The Qing emperor Qianlong reportedly praised the area as the finest spring landscape in the land.
