Tønsberg
Vestfold · Norway
Generally regarded as the oldest city in Norway, Tønsberg traces its origins to at least 871 and was mentioned by Snorri Sturluson in Harald Hårfagre's saga. The ruins of Castrum Tunsbergis — Norway's largest castle in the 13th century — crown Slottsfjellet hill above a walkable centre with a dense food-and-drink scene and views over the Oslofjord. The city is also the site of Oseberg Mound, where the 9th-century Oseberg Ship was excavated, and hosts an outdoor music festival at the fortress each July.
