Claimed by some as the birthplace of Carlos Gardel — the defining figure of tango — Tacuarembó is a town in north-central Uruguay that also serves as a centre of gaucho culture. Its name derives from a Guaraní word meaning "bamboo shoot," and it is the capital of the Tacuarembó Department.
