Crater lake on the northern slopes of Gunung Lesung in Bali, Tamblingan sits within a large caldera alongside two sister lakes and is ringed by dense forest that keeps the highland air cool. Eleven Hindu temples line its shores, several linked to settlements recorded between the 10th and 14th centuries, and the lake's name derives from Balinese words meaning medicine and spiritual memory. Development here has been deliberately kept low-key to preserve the natural environment.
