Taoudenni, a small town in northern Mali, lends its name to the Taoudenni Basin, a significant West African geological formation stretching from Mauritania into Mali across much of the West African Craton. The basin has drawn attention for its petroleum exploration potential. The town sits close to mountainous terrain, in one of the more remote reaches of the Sahara.
