This transport hub in northeastern Morocco's Oriental region, Taourirt is a city known for its ancient Kasbah and its standing as one of Morocco's leading olive producers. The main east-west railway line between Casablanca and Oujda passes through here, and a branch line opened in 2009 connects the city through mountain terrain to Nador. The city name means "hill" in Tamazight.
