Tarakan

An island city off the northern coast of Borneo, Tarakan is the largest urban centre in Indonesia's North Kalimantan province. Once a significant oil-producing region during the colonial era, it became an early Japanese target in the Pacific War due to that strategic value. The city sits entirely on its island, with water on all sides, and has in recent years expanded beyond oil and gas into tourism and other industries.
