Taravai
French Polynesia
The second largest island in French Polynesia's Gambier archipelago, Taravai sits just southwest of Mangareva with an archaeological record stretching back to around AD 950 and possible continuous settlement since the 13th century. The island's eastern shore holds the small village of Agonoko and the Onemea archaeological site, while its pre-Christian history includes a royal lineage that answered to the king of Rikitea on Mangareva.
