Founded in 1574 in a valley of the eastern Andes, Tarija is a southern Bolivian city with a notably dense café and restaurant scene and a historic centre holding several churches alongside landmarks such as the Casa Dorada and the Cathedral of San Bernardo. The city also serves as the centre of Bolivia's wine industry. Its mild semi-arid climate contrasts with both the cold of the Altiplano and the heat of the Amazon Basin, making it a comfortable base year-round.
