Taungoo is a city in Myanmar's Bago Region with a walkable centre dense with cafés, restaurants, and historic churches. The city carries deep significance in Burmese history as the seat of the Toungoo dynasty, which ruled the country for over two centuries between the 16th and 18th centuries, and served as the capital of Burma from 1510 to 1539. Mountain ranges rise to the east and west, and the Sittaung River runs alongside the city.
