City on the southeast coast of Sabah, Borneo, with a walkable centre full of cafés and restaurants and a waterfront within easy reach. Tawau serves as a transit point to nearby islands including Sebatik, Nunukan, and Tarakan, and connects by ferry to Indonesia. Its economy was built on timber and cocoa, and the Teck Guan Cocoa Museum reflects that history. Tawau Hills National Park lies close to the city, and a Japanese War Cemetery and Confrontation Memorial mark its turbulent 20th-century past.
