Ghana's largest seaport anchors this planned city on the Atlantic coast, east of Accra. Commissioned by Ghana's first president, Kwame Nkrumah, and built around a harbour completed in 1961, Tema was designed by Theodore S. Clerk, Ghana's first architect, on the site of a former fishing village. The Greenwich Meridian passes directly through the city, which has grown into the country's primary industrial hub, home to an oil refinery, numerous factories, and one of Ghana's two deep seaports.
