Brazil's only inland northeastern state capital, Teresina sits between the Parnaíba and Poti rivers in Piauí, with a walkable centre dense with cafés, restaurants, and historic churches including the Catedral Metropolitana Nossa Senhora das Dores. The city was Brazil's first planned capital, replacing Oeiras in 1852, and takes its name from the wife of Emperor Pedro II. Known locally as Cidade Verde — Green City — for its tree-lined streets and open green spaces, it is also a major regional hub for healthcare.
