City on the Wabash River in western Indiana, Terre Haute has a compact centre with a concentration of cafés and restaurants. Home to several higher-education institutions — including Indiana State University and Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology — it serves as the county seat of Vigo County and carries the informal title Queen City of the Wabash. The city also houses the United States Penitentiary, Terre Haute, which holds the US federal death row.
