Tessenderlo
Belgium
This Belgian town in Limburg province where the borders of Limburg, Flemish Brabant, and Antwerp meet, Tessenderlo has a compact centre with cafés and restaurants and sits along the Albert Canal. Averbode Abbey stands at the point where the three provinces converge. The town carries a sobering piece of history: on 29 April 1942, an explosion at a chemical plant near the centre killed 189 people, one of Belgium's worst industrial disasters of the Second World War.
