A town in northwestern North Macedonia at the foot of the Šar Mountains, Tetovo is known for two of the country's most significant Ottoman-era landmarks: the Šarena Džamija and the Arabati Baba Teḱe. Founded in the 14th century, the city spent roughly five centuries under Ottoman rule, during which it grew into a manufacturing centre and acquired much of its architectural character. The Pena River runs through the centre, and the surrounding mountain terrain offers access to higher ground.
