Texcoco
Texcoco · Mexico
Once a major Aztec city on the shores of Lake Texcoco, this city in the State of Mexico carries a deep pre-Hispanic past visible in sites such as the palace of Nezahualcoyotl, the Baths of Nezahualcoyotl at Texcotzingo, and the ruins at Huexotla. The 125-tonne stone statue of Chalchiuhtlicue was unearthed nearby before being moved to Mexico City's Museum of Anthropology. Colonial landmarks include the Cathedral and the Juanino Monastery, while Chapingo Autonomous University and the annual International Fair of the Horse reflect the city's more recent character.
