Thakhek

Laos

Thakhek, the capital of Khammouane Province in south-central Laos, sits on the Mekong River opposite the Thai border and serves as the main starting point for the Thakhek Loop, a popular motorcycle circuit through the surrounding karst mountains. The city retains French colonial architecture in its official buildings, villas, and shops, and remnants of an unfinished wartime railway linking Laos to Vietnam can still be seen in and around town. A road bridge across the Mekong connects Thakhek to Nakhon Phanom, Thailand.
