Established on 19 November 1620 as the first Danish trading post in India, Tharangambadi — long known as Tranquebar — sits on the Coromandel Coast of Tamil Nadu, where the Uppanar distributary of the Kaveri River meets the sea. The town's name translates as "place of the singing waves," and its beaches front directly onto the Bay of Bengal. The Danish colony passed to the British East India Company in 1845, leaving a layered colonial history alongside the coastal setting.
