Tihany
Hungary
Tihany, a village on the Tihany Peninsula jutting into Lake Balaton, is anchored by the Benedictine abbey founded in 1055 by King Andrew I, whose founding charter is the earliest surviving record of the Hungarian language. The baroque church, rebuilt in 1754, offers the best views over the lake. The last Habsburg Emperor of Austria, Charles I, was held here after his second attempt to reclaim the Hungarian throne. The peninsula is a protected historical district, with vineyards nearby and an unusually dense café and restaurant scene for a village its size.
